A few weeks ago the owner of Comedy Works in Denver, Colorado emailed me (and other local comedians) looking for show ideas on "off nights" (non-weekends). Shows that were a little different each time, as opposed to the usual format of a stand-up comic doing an act that's pretty much unchanged each time it's presented. (Yes, most of us do that.)

I responded with several ideas that fit the criteria: Jokeoke (where regular people from the audience get up and tell jokes from a joke book or karaoke-like monitor); a game show where the answer that gets the most laughter from the audience is the "correct" answer; a professional stand up show where there are 6 comedians doing 15 minutes each (nothing new, but a different format without a headliner, so to speak); and of course a comedy hypnosis show featuring me and my cast of volunteers. 

Comedy hypnosis shows are different mainly because of the personalities of the volunteers, so my show would fit the "a little different each time" criteria. We decided on the titles "In A Trance Tuesday" and "Sleepy Sunday" and are going for Tuesday nights at the south club… for now. (Hoping for some Sunday nights at the downtown club, too.)

We realize it's an uphill climb: Getting people off their couches and out for an evening that precedes a work day for most. (Even though they'll be home in time for the evening news.) But it will be worth it, if it's entertaining for the audience while at the same time keeping professional comedy shows alive and relevant in Denver, even on school nights.
