Booze and the Company Party

Oct 12, 2016

The other day I was talking with a friend about company parties. He owns a venue that hosts several company events each year.

He told me he noticed that he was getting fewer bookings and had been told by previous party clients that excessive boozing at the parties had forced their decision to either cut out the company party altogether or have it somewhere where alcohol wasn't served.

Some companies have addressed the subject by issuing drink tickets, with some success. Other companies have sent out email blasts that say something to the effect of: "Don't get all plastered at the company party and make a fool of yourself."

However, company events tend to do good; building relationships and giving everyone in the company a chance to mingle outside of the workplace.

So what was the idea I came up with to curb over drinking at company events? Hire variety entertainment.

A comedian, hypnotist or magician will keep your guests focused for an hour or so. Not that they won't be drinking, but why do you think comedy clubs have a 2 drink minimum? Because when people are entertained, they forget to drink.

That hour of nursing an adult beverage instead of guzzling it down may be the difference between a sober-ish soiree and a blotto bash.
