An Audience Member's Feedback From Last Night's Show at Comedy Works

Dec 20, 2015

Last night (Dec. 19th, 2015) I hosted/emceed/opened the stand-up comedy show at Comedy Works South at the Landmark in Denver, CO.

Opening and emceeing a show is a skill and an art. Some comics look down on opening and want to "move up" as quickly as possible (and who can blame them, feature spots are usually the easiest and headlining pays the most). I am always happy to open/emcee and had a great time doing so last night.

There were 2 shows and after the first show I was standing outside the showroom as the audience filed out. While I was standing there a guy came up to me and said, "I thought you were the best comedian of the three of you. I liked all of you but I thought you were the best one."

As comedy is subjective, I knew that that was only his opinion. I said, "Thank you" and told him that I appreciated his compliment. Then he went on. He explained to me that he was a musician (he played fiddle) and that he was just now starting to play in public.

Here's where he began to give me the real compliment: He said that during my set and introductions he was observing my eye contact and body language, that he was impressed with the way I ENGAGED the audience. I told him that's what it's all about (for me, at least) and I wished him luck in his musical endeavors.

I may not ever be the funniest, wittiest or most popular stand up comic out there. Or even on any given show. But... if I can be one of the most engaging, while being even somewhat funny and witty, I've accomplished what I strive for: Engagement.

Thank you for the compliment (and for noticing), fiddle playing guy.

Rusty aka James is one of THE most gifted comedians I have ever seen, and I have been a full time touring professional since 1985.

But natural talent is not everything in any creative endeavor. HARD WORK is what puts the nitro with the glycerin and the explosion happens. James is a student of the craft and continues to improve even after decades of his own hard work.

MUCH respect to one of my all time favorite performers - and a tremendous human being as well. There aren't enough like him, and MUCH respect to his significant accomplishments.
