National Unknown Entertainers' Day

Mar 31, 2014

One day, many years ago a now ex-girlfriend and I were attending a street festival in downtown Fort Worth, Texas.  There were several stages set up; a main stage and a few other smaller stages.  As we passed one of the smaller stages I was spellbound by the music being played.  There were a few bales of hay scattered around the stage for seating, although only a handful of people stopped and were listening.  Most were passing by, on their way to the next corn dog stand or whatever.

I stopped and copped a squat on a hay bale while my girlfriend at the time said she was going to a craft booth.  I was enjoying the music the 3 women on the small stage were dishing out.  A few minutes later my girlfriend came back and said, "Are you ready to go?" I said, "No. I want to stay and listen some more." She replied (rather huffily), "C'mon. It's just the Dixie Chicks, we can see them any time!"  So, we moved on.

Now whether you like the Dixie Chicks and their music or not, you're probably not going to see them for free at a street festival in Fort Worth.  But... you might see someone else.  Someone just as talented who hasn't been discovered yet.

So while you can pay $76 (and up) to see the Dixie Chicks (or some other famous entertainer) you could, for a fraction of that, support a local and not yet famous entertainer. One who's playing at your local night club, comedy club, theater, community center or even on a small stage during a street festival in Fort Worth (or the city of your choice). In fact, let's make a day to celebrate unknown entertainers, the ones who are getting their chops and following their dreams and hoping, however small the chances are, to not be unknown any more.
