It Takes Courage

Feb 16, 2014

About a month ago I was contacted by a booking agent about doing a benefit show on February 15th. I said, "Sure, I'm open that night, let's do it." The agent contacted the potential client (the entertainment buying volunteer) and the client agreed to have me perform at the benefit.

About a week later I get a call from the agent telling me that the client was "nervous" about having a comedy hypnotist perform at their event. They have had "regular" comedians in the past. So... I got cancelled.

The agent booked a "safer" (at least from the client's perspective) comedy act to do their benefit. I'm sure it turned out fine, as this agent only represents quality comedians.

But was it the best show the client could have had? We'll never know. Because like so many people who are afraid to ask the attractive person out, afraid to go for the job they really want, or even afraid to change their hairstyle, this client chickened out and "settled." And settling is usually safe, predictable and oftentimes, boring.

Hopefully the show went well, and hopefully next years' entertainment buying volunteer will have the cajones to take a risk, grab life by the horns and go for the show that will make the audience sit up, take notice and congratulate the buyer on their willingness to try something different.
